Rhum Barbancourt White
Rhum Barbancourt has been producing rum in Port Au Prince Haiti since 1862. While shopping I came across their “white” rhum and had to pick a bottle up to review. This rhum is made from fresh pressed sugarcane juice that after the fermentation and distillation process, is rested in a stainless steel tank for less than a year. After the resting process is completed, the liquid is bottled at 43% abv.
Appearance
The rhum comes in a standard 750 ml bottle with a metal screw top. The labels provide basic information, directing those who wish to know more about the product to the website. The liquid is crystal clear with a small amount of distillate suspended in it. Agitating the liquid creates a razor thin band that quickly thickens, beads up, and drops a wave of fast-moving legs, then slowly drops another wave of slow-moving legs. After several minutes, the band evaporates, leaving a small amount of pebbling behind.
Nose
The aroma is a combination of tropical fruits- fresh cut banana and tart mango, sugarcane, and a sweet floral vanilla.
Palate
The rhum is an interesting balance of the fruit and vanilla flavors from the aroma, balanced with a light peppery note. The liquid has a full bodied mouthfeel that lingers on the palate. As it transitions toward its finish, the rhum has a light earthiness to it where I detected a range of mineral notes before its long finish terminates.
Review
Like with all rhums in the Barbancourt line, I found the experience of their minimally rested rhum to be an interesting and positive experience. The company has designed this rhum to be used in cocktails and recommends it for cocktails like the Mojito and Cuba Libre. It is easy to see that with its flavor profile it would do well in those kinds of drinks, but seriously, I have a hard time imagining it not being serviceable in any cocktail that uses minimally aged rhums. Sipping the rhum neat is a unique experience, and personally, I particularly enjoyed the transition and range of the earth and mineral notes found in the last part of the evaluation. In a good many rums, this part goes by quickly, so it was a pleasant change to experience a slower transition. With its fair price point, this is an easy pick up for when I am making Daiquiris or other tropical drinks for my guests.
