Antelope Island Rum
Located in Salt Lake City Utah, Dented Brick Distillery has recently premiered its first product: Antelope Island Rum. The rum is named for Antelope Island, home to a 28,240 acre wildlife refuge for antelopes, bison and over 250 species of birds.
The company has taken steps to use only non-GMO regionally grown ingredients as the base for their products and state that there are no chemicals or flavorings added to the product. The distiller y uses a custom Vendome copper and brass still and uses an onsite artesian well water for fermenting the molasses and blending the rum to 80 proof.
Appearance/Presentation
The 750 ml bottle’s front label reminds me of a vintage tourist poster from the 1950’s. The colorful front label provides basic details while the back provides some information about the rum along with the usual legal requirements. The liquid is crystal clear in the bottle and glass. When the liquid is agitated, a razor thin ring is created that produces fast moving legs. The ring thickens as it evaporates slowly leaving behind a line of beads clinging to the side of the glass.
Nose
The aroma begins with a strong pop of vanilla bean ice cream, a subdued note of butterscotch, tropical fruits with anise and ear thy minerals nipping around the edges.
Palate
The first sip of the rum enters with strong notes of butterscotch and bananas. As these flavors begin to fade, the vanilla manifest mid-palate, while strong mineral notes are forming the baseline and honeydew melon taking the high notes. As the flavors coalesce and the rum begins to fade there is a surprise note that made me think of chocolate covered cherries right as the rum begins to fade into a lightly dry finish.
Review
Antelope Island small batch rum enters in the marketplace with a flavor profile that was surprisingly diverse and complex. I was not surprised to find a butterscotch note but the way the company has tamed, subdued and built on and around it is something special.
All of the flavors make me want to experiment with it, be creative and celebrate the unique identity found in this spirit. Antelope Island rum recently premiered in Utah.
-Rum Review by Mr. Paul Senft-
My name is Paul Senft - Rum Reviewer, Tasting host, Judge and Writer. My exploration of Rums began by learning to craft Tiki cocktails for friends. I quickly learned that not all rums are created equally and that the uniqueness of the spirit can be as varied as the locales they are from. This inspired me to travel with my wife around the Caribbean, Central America, and United States visiting distilleries and learning about how each one creates their rums. I have also had the pleasure of learning from bar tenders, brand ambassadors, and other enthusiasts from around the world; each one providing their own unique point of view, adding another chapter to the modern story of rum. The desire to share this information led me to create www.RumJourney.com where I share my experiences and reviews in the hopes that I would inspire others in their own explorations. It is my wish in the pages of “Got Rum?” to be your host and provide you with my impressions of rums available in the world market. Hopefully my tasting notes will inspire you to tr y the rums and make your own opinions. The world is full of good rums and the journey is always best experienced with others. Cheers!
