Around The Rum World
-by Carl Kanto
In 2008 China hosted the Summer Olympics – the biggest sporting spectacle in the world. Seven years later, 2015, China hosted the Olympics of Spirits – Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Spirts Selection Competition.
With almost 1,400 spirits from 44 producing countries competing and being judged by 83 spirit tasters of 23 different nationalities over a grueling three days of intense analyses, 17 of these spirits were awarded Grand Gold Medals, 222 were awarded Gold Medals and 197 Silver Medals. The Best Spirit Trophy was awarded to Rhum Isautier Vieux 7 Ans by Rhums & Punchs Isautier of the Reunion Islands – the first time ever in the history of the competition 21 years of existence that a rum has been awarded this coveted title.
The next edition of Spirits Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles will take place at the end of August 2016 in Tequila, Mexico, much closer to the Caribbean. Would a Caribbean rum have the distinction of wearing the prestigious crown by capturing the Best Spirit Trophy?
Only time will tell.
