The Spirit of Survival
This month’s issue of “Got Rum?” includes part 2 of The Spirit of Survival (see page 54). Following last month’s publication of part 1, I received several comments and inquiries from readers, asking what the future of yeast’s evolution looks like. Rest assured that we will explore this topic in the next installment of the series, for now all I want to share is that the chemical and biological war between microorganisms never ends, resulting in a continuous evolution of attack and defense strategies.
This reminds me of the poem “You Will Never See Me Fall” by Joyce Alcantara:
You may see me struggle,
but you won’t see me fall.
Regardless if I’m weak or not,
I’m going to stand tall.
Everyone says life is easy,
but truly living it is not.
Times get hard,
people struggle
and constantly get put on the spot.
I’m going to wear the biggest smile,
even though I want to cry.I’m going to fight to live,
even though I’m destined to die.
And even though it’s hard
and I may struggle through it all,
you may see me struggle...but you will NEVER see me fall.
What is your strategy to overcome life’s struggles and obstacles? Has it been the same all your life or has it evolved over time? Unlike the microbial world, where evolutionary adaptations can require thousands or millions of years to happen, us humans can choose different strategies on-demand, changing and adapting much faster than the animal kingdom can. Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable summer.
Cheers!
