Spices
Spices have been at the core of human’s enjoyment of food since the early days of civilization. Trade routes were created around their commerce, even international standards to protect their origins.
It is said that they are the key healthy diets, which in turn give us healthier bodies. American writer William Arthur Ward wrote that:
“The adventure of life is to learn.
The purpose of life is to grow.
The nature of life is to change.
The challenge of life is to overcome.
The essence of life is to care.
The opportunity of like is to serve.
The secret of life is to dare.
The spice of life is to befriend.
The beauty of life is to give.”
In the beverage industry, spices typically find their way into the “Spiced Rum” category, dominated primarily by cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and clove. Enterprising craft distillers, however, are also using them in original new creations, such as Ian Justin Glomski, Founder & Head Distiller at Vitae Spirits Distillery. You don’t want to miss his Exclusive Interview, starting on page 46.
Spices and botanicals in general are also used in the preparation of extracts and tinctures. In this issue we explore the science behind their creation and give you a few simple recipes to get started, please turn to page 34 for the full article.
How do you normally incorporate spices into your everyday life? Finally, we are officially in OND (October, November, December), the busiest time of the year for the distilled spirits industry. Please support your local craft distillers as you make preparations for the approaching holiday season. Many distilleries have tasting rooms that can be reserved for private events, but you must reserve them well in advance. To the spirit of the cane!
